Susan Bankert & Barking Tree Pottery

Born in 1960 in upstate New York, Susan Bankert now lives in Sadsburyville, Pennsylvania with her husband and their two daughters. She is a full-time mom, studio potter and educator.

Susan received her BFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1982, and her MFA from Wichita State University in Witchita, Kansas in 1987. She also attended Boston University's Program in Artisanry from 1983-1984. After receiving her MFA Susan attended a two-year artist-in-residency program at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, Michigan. The program was designed to allow professionals an opportunity to work and learn the nuances involved in setting up a studio practice.

In 1992, Susan established Barking Tree Pottery in Sadsburyville in western Chester Country, where she continues to commit herself to making salt-fired functional pottery. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and has been published in Ceramics Monthly and Studio Potter magazines. She is currently an instructor at Chester Springs Studio.
